December 30, 1981 (NO judgment on this one - eeeek)

Right now, I’m at work. It’s 7:33 a.m., and Amber is the only child here. So since I had some free time, I thought I’d write about what I did last night. Mom and Dad’s secretary, Mary McWhirter, her son got married last night. We were invited, and gave a ride to Tommy Burris, who lives next door to Uncle Lee. Anyway, for days now, Mom has made a point of me meeting Tommy. He was okay, but it’s not Tommy that struck me. It’s a guy, Charles. A lot of the people from Dad’s office went to Steak and Ale after the wedding. I sat on the corner, Tommy to the left of me, (Head of the table) and Charles sat across from me. (Tommy and Charles were the only single guys there). Tommy is a sweet guy and rather amusing, but not at all my type. Charles, I thought was closer to 30, I found out later, that he’s only 21. He has already graduated from college, also taken two years off specifically for traveling, and now has planted a good job at Jamic, where Dad shares an office with Garland Gibbs. Charles is a great connoisseur (spelling?) of great food and wine. He has been practically everywhere except the Carribean. I’ve only been to the Carribean, so we had a lot to talk about. After dinner, we decided that we’re going to get together to see “Reds” a new movie with Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton. It’s supposed to be excellent. I’m definitely going to take him up on it. Oh, Charles is definitely cute. You won’t believe who he reminds me of, Richard Dreyfuss. Maybe that explains part of my attraction to him. Charles is better looking (he has beautiful eyes), but he does remind me of Dreyfuss. It could be the reason he reminds me of Dreyfuss is the fact he’s Jewish. Oh yeah. That can be a drag. Because I’m so Christ oriented, yet Charles is so interesting. Maybe we can just be good friends. (I sure have started out with a strong attraction just for friends). Oh well. If Dee Ann can care for a black guy, why can’t I care for a Jewish guy? Don’t worry, I’m just rambling on. I wouldn’t let myself ever get serious over him. I can’t. I am going to call him to go see “Reds” though. I’d kind of like to go this Friday night.

(2021 comment - Glad things have changed now - more accepting -always admired friends who were dating bi-racially.. took an element of courage that I just didn't have then, but luckily, taught my children love and acceptance)

Enough on Charles. Oh, a song by Barry Manilow is on the radio. “Somewhere Down the Road”. It sort of reminds me of Carl. The first lines are “We had the right love at the wrong time.” That’s definitely true for Carl and me. I haven’t seen Carl since that dreaded Summer night at Kenneth’s, when Carl had a girl over, and I was all ready to get back together. I don’t like talking too much about Carl either.

Enough for now.
