We had loads of fun with the kids at Bryant & Barb's pretty "Leave it to Beaver" house.

(I remember playing Red Light/Green Light with them and Mother, May I?) I remember Laura being EXTRA cute.)

APRIL 12, 1988

Tuesday

The following is mostly from a letter I wrote to Jim in London.

Howdy! (As we truly DO NOT say in Texas.) What happened to you? Really and truly Easter would not have been a good time for you to come and see me but I was sorry not to hear from you. When I received your letter, I had just come back from a family vacation to El Paso, Tucson, Arizona and New Mexico. In Tucson, I went to a movie set where they make many western movies and t.v. shows. It was pretty neat standing where Steve Martin, John Wayne and Elizabeth Taylor once stood. They made Three Amigos there. Have you seen that? I know you see quite a bit of what we see, but not as much. I’m sure we miss a lot of the good stuff you have also.

The Academy Awards were on last night. I really liked Moonstruck with Cher (you probably know her) but The Last Emperor was very good also, which won best picture of the year. In case you didn’t know, I LOVE movies very much. Music, movies and mania. Tee hee! I love dancing very much also!

(Ole From Sweden actually came to visit Mary - and we took him down to the cabin. MAN!

“We were the Girls to know.” - GREAT memory with Mary from our London trip with Mom and Dad.)

I have only just started looking for a new job. I like the job I have but need more money. For the years of experience I have with word processing (computers) I should be further along in salary than I am. I don’t need much, just enough to pay bills and stuff. I live a pretty meager existence, but love my life very much. Life to me IS music, art, vacations and fun, not to mention loving and being loved.

I love having interesting friends in interesting places. We can learn from each other and always be pen pals. In the meantime, we may even see each other again someday.

Mom and Dad are doing great. They own their own business in Garland, Houston and San Antonio but are seriously thinking about selling and retiring. I think that would be great so they can travel as often as they want. I’d love it!

(2022 comment - bit of recap- Dad had always had plans for Mike Burton to buy/inherit the business..they both worked so hard - Mike, his wife Doris, and Andi were all on that ‘86 cruise w/us… End of ‘87, Mike died of a brain tumor. I cried more and more at that funeral than Alex’s.. Or my parents later, for that matter. All I could think of at the time was Andi not having her father in her young life. I have a Daddy thing - LOVED him - and received the most unconditional, agape love from him. I just want that for every young lady/girl)

I just came back from lunch. It’s 1:10 p.m. I went back to the employment agency looking for a job during lunch. I keep attempting typing tests to try and get the score I know I am capable of. I test myself at work and do much better than I do at the employment agency. I always HATED tests. I guess that’s why I do worse there. But each time (I’ve tried three times) I attempt it, I do much better. Maybe next time I’ll do my best. I wish they would hand jobs out by your standing and not by competition. I’m a very confident person about my abilities, I just hate to have to prove it.

Do write soon and tell me how you are getting along. How is YOUR new job?

I’m going to have to quit writing and get back to work.

Take care and write soon! OR CALL!

Love ya

Janie B

(2022 - I do want to add that Jim and I corresponded by letter multiple times - but I only kept this one letter… I remember naively? Or just stupidly asking what he did for Thanksgiving which he thought that was hilarious. - in a British accent - “Love, we don’t have Thanksgiving here as it is an American holiday.” Oh my! Gotta Love Me!.)
