DECEMBER ENDINGS (I still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For) - 1987 (Original)

(2022 comment - Susan Campbell, LouAnn’s daughter, set me up with Darren Ross, her boss at Chili’s Casa Linda. He was a nice enough guy and we dated pretty consistently November-January? But I mainly remember him talking a heck of a lot about his ex. Ugh- Weirdly, I remember him living at Hilton Head Apartments on Jupiter Rd. and I passed them just today.)

NEWEST TRASH IN DALLAS

(meaning Trash Talk)

Dear Ann:

Hey! What’s up? Sorry about the typing, it seems impersonal, but trust me, it’s not. Obviously, I’m at work without much to do (which is a scary thing these days.) Why? I’ll tell you. Oh Ann… we had 30 people laid off yesterday. You know, I don’t know if that pertains to HRM or not. I haven’t heard. It’s been pretty crazy! Rumor has it that there will be at least that many by the end of December. Looks like you picked a good time to leave. I know you probably won’t know any of these names, but.. Some people are two who were close to retirement (a year off or so) Betty Davidson and Barbara Patton. A girl I know pretty well, Sam Welch and Barbara Brown who is extremely sharp and been around for quite a while. The lady who is over my boss’s boss (Judy Emens) was laid off also. Pretty weird!

Well.. gossip is over! For now. Things are going pretty well between me and Darren Ross. We went and saw Planes, Trains & Automobiles last night with Steve Martin and John Candy. It was good, but when seeing it don’t expect it to be extremely hilarious. It’s funny quite a bit in places, but also very endearing and sentimental. I liked it! Good movie for the holidays.

Have you heard from Tom? He was nice. Thanks for having us over that night! But one question.. Now that I have plant clippings from your plant, what do I do with them? This is a girl who has never had any plants in her apartment, except roses. (Tough life, but somebody’s gotta live it.)

Oh, Oh, OH! Last week (Tuesday before Thanksgiving) I wanted someone to go see Cross my Heart with me and Darren was working.. So, I asked Randall. Big mistake! Ann, he made a big play for me. I mean, really. I told him right away that Darren and I were dating and have been for a little while. That didn’t stop him. The movie didn’t help either, it was romantic. It’s really funny too. Anyway, before the movie, I was playing “Ms. PacMan” and while playing, he actually started kissing my neck. I couldn’t believe it. I just kinda giggled and pushed him away. We went to Dairy Queen and he bought my ice cream (he had bought my movie also.) Old habits… I forgot to refuse the treat. We did have a good time, which didn’t help much. When he took me home, he walked me to the door, but my keys were already in hand. I said I was really tired and needed to get to sleep. It was 9:50 or so. He gave me a kiss (I made it very quick) and I ran into the apartment. I was really confused for the next few days since I didn’t see Darren until Sunday night because of the holidays.

Sunday night we went and saw Tina Turner and Level 42 in concert. It was great! She was great!

I should have mailed this by now, but I’ll write a little more. Oh today I’m going crazy!! I just rode up and down on the elevator, before I realized that I needed to get off. My mind is soaring somewhere, but I don’t know where.

Oh Ann, I don’t know about Darren. Friday night (1:00 a.m. Saturday morn) he came over. He stayed the night (not for the first time.) All day Saturday we had quite a bit of fun, we went to Chili’s (not a shock) then we saw Three Men and a Baby. It was cute. Anyway, we parted company about 5:15 p.m. or so, because I had a surprise party at Michelino’s Italian Restaurant for my mom. She wasn’t surprised. I found myself missing Darren; he said if things became a drag or nothing was planned afterwards, to come over he’d be at his apartment hanging around. So I did about 8:45. Well, Ann, he was like a different person. One of his roommates, Doug, was there and Darren was less than amourous, I should say. Guys have a way of doing that around their buddies, and I have real trouble with that. Darrell, his brother, came shortly after and we all played dominoes. Darrell’s okay, but Doug cussed word after another. And not just damn and hell. He said the F word every chance he had. That’s ridiculous! I really came very short of yelling something at him. That shows a real insecurity problem to me. Well, I ended up with a terrible headache and after two hours and two more people, Darren suggested I go lie down on the bed. I did because my head hurt so terribly. Next thing I knew, it was Sunday morning and Darren was getting up (6:15 a.m.) to go to work. Ann, there was no hug, kiss or anything. It’s like we’re an old married couple already after one month! Oh I don’t know! Maybe it was just a weird night, and that’s it!

I’ve been thinking about having artificial insemination. No men; no marriage. Dad gave me permission this weekend. It was his suggestion. We found out no one is going to be around for Christmas. The only one they can rely on is me. (My dad said this.) So he suggested I have a baby, but not get married. If it was artificial insemination I wouldn’t have to worry about the husband’s or man’s rights. That's the problem with all divorces. We never get to see the kids. It’s bad sometimes.

Well anyway.. Gotta go! I’ll try to write again before Christmas. It’s 11:20 a.m., and I’m trying to send this before lunch.

(Thursday)

Dear Ann:

Hey chick! How are you? Write me, you hear?

I’ll tell you what’s up with me. Last Thursday night (the 10th) I had, you won’t believe it) a totaled car wreck. Yes… again! I’m okay. But I had to go to the hospital for about 8 hours or so, but no plastic surgery this time. Here's the details.

I was on my way home from seeing DeeAnn’s new baby (a baby boy); she’s a best friend of mine from high school. Anyway, I made it from North Plano and Central Expressway to LBJ. I was stopped at Garland Road and LBJ ready to turn left on Garland. I looked (what I swear) was both ways, started out crossing Garland and was plowed into.

They thought I had a hurt neck and back, but turned out to be only minor cuts and bruises. Good thing, I guess. Of course it’s good, but I wouldn’t have minded paid week or so from work and lots of attention. (I know that sounds awful.) Darren came to the hospital to see if I was okay. It was uncomfortable for some strange reason. I wanted him there, but when he came (my parents were there) I felt extremely uncomfortable. Things aren’t good.

(2022 comment - This was my 1984 - Smoky Buick Regal – it was probably almost paid off - ugh.)

December 15, 1987

Randall came over and took me out to eat at the Black Eyed Pea. Then we went shopping and a bit of looking at cars. (2022 comment - I always loved shopping for cars.)

December 17, 1987

We were supposed to have a Flying Solo party at Pat Arrington's but he had to cancel. So Keith (Wallick) and Don Woolsey - from here we will say "Keith & Don" and I went to see Throw Momma from the Train and then ate at Bennigan's after. I laughed soo hard I kept crying. Keith cracks me up! He can sound just like the mother in TMfromTrain - "OWEN!" He would wait til we were talking about something else and then yell in my ear. Just like the mother - EXACTLY! "OWENNNN!! I dreamed Louis Armstrong was playing in my ear!" (2022 comment - I remember having bow-tie pasta at Bennigans and thought it was amazing!!)

December 18, 1987

Keith, Don and I decided it was sooo much fun Friday that we went out again Saturday night. Keith works nights so we have to be back way before midnight. I laughed sooo hard this night also! We saw the movie Overboard with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. They always are so cute together and obviously have so much chemistry!!

December 20, 1987

The Annual Boren Christmas Party - always fun! In 1987 - was it at our 605 W. Vista or Uncle lee's house 204 Duke.. Anyway, at this point, no more grandparents or Aunt Gladys but all of Uncle Lee's family and ours. (2022 a lovely tradition I hated to see end, but after the deaths of Dad and then Uncle Lee... it did die..)

(I still haven't found what I'm Looking For by U2)

Got a new car on December 31, 1987! A 1987 Buick Red Skyhawk. It has hidden lights that pop up like eyes/eyelashes! It is a hatchback also. SOOO cute and yet still a 4 door, which I like.
