December 2, 1987

(Wednesday)

Hey! What’s up? Obviously, I’m at work without much to do (which is a scary thing these days.) Why? I’ll tell you. We had 30 people laid off yesterday. You know, I don’t know if that pertains to HRM or not. I haven’t heard. It’s been pretty crazy! Rumor has it that there will be at least that many by the end of December. Looks like my friend, Ann picked a good time to leave. I know you probably won’t know any of these names, but.. Some people who were laid off are two who were close to retirement (a year off or so) Betty and Barbara... A girl I know pretty well, Sam and Barbara B who is extremely sharp and been around for quite a while. The lady who is over my boss’s boss was laid off also. Pretty weird!

I saw Planes, Trains & Automobiles with a date last night with Steve Martin and John Candy. It was good, but when seeing it don’t expect it to be extremely hilarious. It’s funny quite a bit in places, but also very endearing and sentimental. I liked it! Good movie for the holidays.

My friend, Ann and her boyfriend, Tom had us over for dinner. He was nice. But one question.. She gave me plant clippings from her plant, what do I do with them? This is a girl who has never had any plants in her apartment, except roses. (Tough life, but somebody’s gotta live it.) (2022 comment - OH how I love to get plants and clippings!)

Oh, Oh, OH! Last week (Tuesday before Thanksgiving) I wanted someone to go see Cross my Heart with me. Had a date with Randall.

Sunday night I had a date with Darren to see Tina Turner and Level 42 in concert. It was great! She was electrifying! Level 42 was the opening act - best opening band EVER! (Many songs still remind me of 1986.)

I should have mailed this by now, but I’ll write a little more. Oh today I’m going crazy!! I just rode up and down on the elevator, before I realized that I needed to get off. My mind is soaring somewhere, but I don’t know where. (2022 - Most of this entry is an excerpt from a letter I wrote to my friend Ann)

All day Saturday we had quite a bit of fun, we went to Chili’s (not a shock) then we saw Three Men and a Baby. It was cute. Maybe it was just a weird night, and that’s it!

I’ve been thinking about having artificial insemination. No men; no marriage. Dad gave me permission this weekend. It was his suggestion. We found out no one is going to be around for Christmas. The only one they can rely on is me. (My dad said this.) So he suggested I have a baby, but not get married. If it was artificial insemination I wouldn’t have to worry about the husband’s or man’s rights. That's the problem with all divorces.

Well anyway.. Gotta go! I’ll try to write again before Christmas. It’s 11:20 a.m., and I’m trying to send this before lunch.

(Thursday)

I’ll tell you what’s up with me. Last Thursday night (the 10th) I had, you won’t believe it) a totaled car wreck. Yes… again! I’m okay. But I had to go to the hospital for about 8 hours or so, but no plastic surgery this time. Here's the details.

I was on my way home from seeing DeeAnn’s new baby (a baby boy); she’s a best friend of mine from high school. Anyway, I made it from North Plano and Central Expressway to LBJ. I was stopped at Garland Road and LBJ ready to turn left on Garland. I looked (what I swear) was both ways, started out crossing Garland and was plowed into.

They thought I had a hurt neck and back, but turned out to be only minor cuts and bruises. (Little did I know - between this wreck and the one in 1983, my back has caused me much pain.) Good thing, I guess. Of course it’s good, but I wouldn’t have minded paid week or so from work and lots of attention. (I know that sounds awful.)

(2022 comment - This was my 1984 - Smoky Buick Regal – it was probably almost paid off - ugh.)

December 15, 1987

We went shopping and a bit of looking at cars. (2022 comment - I always loved shopping for cars.)

December 17, 1987

We were supposed to have a Flying Solo party at Pat Arrington's but he had to cancel. So Keith (Wallick) and Don Woolsey - from here we will say "Keith & Don" and I went to see "Throw Momma from the Train" and then ate at Bennigan's after. I laughed soo hard I kept crying. Keith cracks me up! He can sound just like the mother in TMfromTrain - "OWEN!" He would wait til we were talking about something else and then yell in my ear. Just like the mother - EXACTLY! "OWENNNN!! I dreamed Louis Armstrong was playing in my ear!" (2022 comment - I remember having bow-tie pasta at Bennigans and thought it was amazing!!)

December 18, 1987

Keith, Don and I decided it was sooo much fun Friday that we went out again Saturday night. Keith works nights so we have to be back way before midnight. I laughed sooo hard this night also! We saw the movie Overboard with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. They always are so cute together and obviously have so much chemistry!!

December 20, 1987

The Annual Boren Christmas Party - always fun! In 1987 - was it at our 605 W. Vista or Uncle Lee's house 204 Duke.. Anyway, at this point, no more grandparents or Aunt Gladys but all of Uncle Lee's family and ours. (2022 a lovely tradition I hated to see end, but after the deaths of Dad and then Uncle Lee... it did die..)

(I still haven't found what I'm Looking For by U2)

Got a new car on December 31, 1987! A 1987 Buick Red Skyhawk. It has hidden lights that pop up like eyes/eyelashes! It is a hatchback also. SOOO cute and yet still a 4 door, which I like. (wish I had a better pic - this one looks OLLLD - mine was shiny!)
