DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY/LOVE BITES AT HALLOWEEN - OCTOBER PART 2

October 20, 1988

The next day at work I told 2-3 people we had broken up. The operator said “Oh you’re really pretty. You can do better, I think.” Valerie Cary, my fun friend, immediately said “Oh, that’s probably for the best. BTW, I have a great guy for you!” In two days I had a date with someone I had never met.

(2022 - Valerie always reminded/looked like Claudette Colbert. She loved old movies too and was a young newlywed)

We double dated (Valerie and her husband Friday night with a very nice guy (can NOT remember his name) - actually, I think his name was Chris.

(2022 addition) - Randall called - once again - and I told him Keith and I had broken up. He came and picked me up, we went to eat and ended up at his new house in Rowlett. Nothing really clicked this time at all. I remember watching some silly game/reality show and.. just felt awkward. I think Randall read my body language, no advances were made. We did have a short conversation about Keith, and I told him our breakup just didn't truly feel final. He respected that.

Even though a bit bereft, I continue to sing in Choir, have fun with friends, keep my spirits up. Maybe we were just meant to be friends.

(2022 comment - Softly & Tenderly remains my favorite hymn to this day)

(2022 - That Sunday night, Elaine and I saw the movie Mystic Pizza with a young and not known, Julia Roberts. I still love that movie to this day!) I thought Lily Taylor was the star of the show - the real stand out. At this point in her career, Julia didn't stand out for me.

The NEXT Friday night, the 28th, (we'll call him Chris) and I went out again. Conversation was easy, but my heart just wasn't in it. I came back to his apartment and we sat on the carpet where he pulled out a guitar. He had lemon drops in an antique candy dish on a pretty quilt. Then he serenaded me a bit. He was quite good. (though I still can’t remember his name.) He did lean over and kiss me, but… it just wasn’t Keith.

I woke up on a Saturday morning and the first song I heard was Hands to Heaven. Then I heard Strong, Strong Man by Rick Astley. I raised my fist over the bed and hit it hard and said "This is just ridiculous." It just didn’t make sense at ALL!

That night the Flying Solo class/singles went to a stage show of Dracula. (someone I know was in it?) - for Halloween fun. We went out to eat first with the group. I had already informed friends that Keith and I had broken up.

Keith sat to the right of me and Louis sat to the left. Louis whispered to me "are you sure you're broken up?" "Yep." He then said "You could've fooled me. The flirting and fireworks are everywhere."

After the play we went to Mom and Dad's house to play games. They were at the cabin. Keith had to go to Brookshires to work (night shift.) We had so much fun playing Charades and other games. I remember Lynda King (now Knagg) saying "Oh it's late, I have to go." Someone else said "OH! Time change! We get an extra hour tonight!" Lynda said "OH! Great! Let's play another one!" Such a fun time!!
