KOKOMO AND KEYS - AUGUST 1988

Kokomo from Cocktail

Keith and I went on a date to see Cocktail with Tom Cruise. I enjoyed it but Keith literally left me in the theatre alone! I wasn't even sure if he just went to the bathroom or what? I went looking for him after awhile, but couldn't find him so I bought Junior Mints and went back and finished the movie.

When it was over I went out to the parking lot and found him sleeping in the truck. I said "What are you doing???" "Why did you come out here?" He said "I didn't like all the drinking and carousing, etc. in that movie and I wasn't gonna watch anymore." I told him it ended up really good and the guy (Cruise) straightened up, fell in love and it was really good/sweet. Keith wouldn't budge. I should've said something more to him -- like why would you leave me all alone? etc. but I didn't....

Don took me (us?) to see a sneak of Young Guns. It was a western and I really enjoyed that one also!

Things have been going really well with Keith. I can’t make myself date just him though without us having that conversation.

Keith gave me his key to his house. I thought of the Way we Were and Robert Redford giving Barb his key (or was it the other way around?) At the time of that movie, I thought it was shameful - ha

I was sooo excited and saw this as a huge commitment!

(Way we Were - Katie offers key to Hubbell)

But am "I" ready for him??? Randall still calls here and there and I don't feel he's out of my system yet. I wish I could foresee the future a bit. I'm really only dating Keith, I leave work and go straight to his house, we eat together, hang out with Don and watch shows.

But there has been NO talk of commitment, relationship, etc. Nothing exclusive has been talked about.

August 12, 1988

There is a new movie out that is causing quite a stir. It is about Jesus and called "The Last Temptation of Christ." I heard Dallas is banning it. Elaine and I were talking about going to Austin to see it and then Roger said the same thing. I would probably feel better about riding and crossing picket lines with Roger than Elaine....

Later in late August, Dallas lifted the ban and decided to show it here after all. I am huge about not judging ANYTHING unless I've seen it - so I told Roger I would very much like to see it. So one night, a weeknight, we drove into Dallas (Prestonwood Mall Theatre) and there were long lines of protesters picketing the movie. I was glad I was with a tall guy like Roger.

All in all, I didn't find it to be offensive much at all. It was basically looking at Jesus as a man. Just a man. It was interesting. But I didn't think it was all that great either. It starred Willem DeFoe (from Platoon)

August 28, 1988

Randall and I went out Saturday night. We saw Married to the Mob. It was alright.

I told him I had been dating Keith - pretty much - exclusively.. but we still had fun and caught up. I had some wine at the apartment and he and I had a bit when we came back.

On Sunday, Keith surprised me (after he got off work all night) and knocked on the door while I was getting ready for church. I hadn't cleaned up the kitchen/dining table from the night before with Randall.

He saw the wine glasses and had a jealous fit of sorts, especially seeing TWO wineglasses. I don't remember the exact words, but he made it clear he did not like that. I kinda liked it. He walked out, threw his hands in the air - like "what now?"

It's the first time I truly saw that he wanted to be committed... Maybe?? nah! but maybe I can rely on this relationship??

2022 comment - In August 1988, our group and choir put on "Over the Rainbow" Talent show. Keith helped Cathy and I a LOT setting up. The song "Get Outta My Car" reminds me of that night decorating.

Cathy, Sherri, Don & I did the Crow number from the Wiz "You Can't Win." Don was the Michael Jackson part and Cathy, Sherri and I danced around him. It was goofy but fun!

I sang "Embraceable You" by Gershwin. A LOT of fun! Every time I hear "Get Outta My Car" it takes me back to the fellowship Hall on a Thursday nite. Keith said I did a great job. (2022 think that's the only time he complimented me on singing...)

Cathy and I sang I knew him so well from Chess.

(2022 - I am getting this put on digital as we speak/type)
