AUGUST 4, 1983
Thursday

(2021 comment - They were called Englenook Apts. @ Greenville Rd. & Forest Lane Rd. - If I recall, it was condemned not too terribly long after I moved out -but I was sooo thrilled to become more independent - Kat and I got along quite well as roommates - and still great friends today!)

August 7, 1983 is Therese's 28th birthday!
August 6th was Chuck Pearson's wedding

The apartment situation is still going great! I have to pick up a couch from a lady here at work. She’s giving me a couch and chair for $25 total. I can’t get over that. Neither are very pretty, but in good condition. (Knowing what I know now about antiques, this salmon colored couch was a mid-century modern relic… but truthfully, that didn’t make it any prettier - ha)
Guess who called me yesterday? Carl. I couldn’t believe it. He mainly called to tell me that Victor Hernandez (a guy I met once at a cast party, but kissed) his wife, child and mother died in a car wreck. This may sound awful, but it didn’t affect me that much since I really didn’t know him too well. The only reason I kissed himwas when everybody left the party (at 5 a.m. or so) everybody kissed everybody. So therefore I kissed him. Anyway, Carl asked how I was. I told him I am moving out and he was excited for me. He told me if I needed him for anything, to call and he’d help. I told him that I may have a party after I’m totally settled (A “Janie’s finally moving out” party.) (2021 comment - I don’t remember this at ALL!!! I always regretted that he and I weren’t running around as friends and this would’ve been a great opportunity…)
I’ve been thinking, I’ll probably have a Halloween party, because Robert Bevis probably won’t have one since the group split up a while ago. Somebody will need to have a really good Halloween party, might as well be me. We’ll wait and see whether I have a moving out party or wait for the Halloween party.
Nevertheless, I am going to find some good reason to call Carl back, so that we could at least get together and talk. I could not say whether or not I would even want to date him again or not, we had a lot of problems, but, I would like to really talk to him and see how much we’ve grown up in nearly two years. (It will be two years in April that we broke up for good.) Mom heard my side of the conversation and she said I acted very casual and non-chalant. I’m glad I didn’t sound as shaken as I felt. That’s the last thing I would want, is for him to think I still carry a torch for him. I really don’t, it just took me off guard.

Wowee! Zowee! Did I have a good weekend! Where do I begin? It all started, I guess, last Thursday night, August 18th. I went with Roger to Spaghetti Warehouse (this was his last night in Dallas before he goes back to school) and then we met DeeAnn and Brian at Simon and Garfunkel concert in the Cotton Bowl. It sprinkled off and on during the concert, but that actually made it more fun. Not only was the concert excellent, but a neat thing happened. Paul Simon, a few days before, had married Carrie Fisher. Well, at one point in the concert, she comes out!! Yes, Princess Lhea was on stage with Simon and Garfunkel! Wow! That was neat. The four of us thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. This is the last concert tour S&G will ever give. (Also I was excited that CF was also Debbie Reynolds’s daughter)

R&R Here Ya' Come Again!!!
The next day, August 19th, Sherri came over after work. We went and saw Vacation with Chevy Chase, Beverly DiAngelo and Imogene Coca. It was funny. Imogene Coca is the one that made me crack up so much. We then went to Pizza Inn and enjoyed that. When we came home, we found a note on the door. The message read “It’s Randall and Barry cruising the streets with nothing to do (BooHoo), it’s 10:50 and nobody home. Call ya later though.” (Or something very similar.) That totally floored me. Needless to say, my mind switched from Carl to Randall. We later watched Ninochtka with Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas. That was excellent. (I went to bed at 2:30 a.m.)
The next morning, August 20th (which is Russell’s birthday) about 10:30 a.m., Randall called. At noon, he picked me up and we bought some Pepsi lights and Dr Peppers, some chicken, and headed for Bachman Lake. Oh, that was fun. We ate first, paddle boated for an hour, then walked around the lake. We had time for a long and candid talk. I brought up the good and bad things of our previous relationship. He apologized, I apologized. He told me that he had been dating a girl, Carrie (I’ve met her) and he said through her he realizes how wonderful I am. TEE HEE! He said I’m extremely pleasant and easy to get along with. Boy, how I loved to hear that. I think I really needed to hear that at this point. After the lake, he brought me home (about 4:45) went home and showered, and came back about 7:00. I had invited Randall, Barry, Sherri, DeeAnn and Brian over to play games and visit. I was so delighted that DeeAnn and Brian did come. We all played Uno and had a great time. (Brian and Randall seemed to hit it off great.) About 2:45 a.m., Randall went home because he said he was a zombie, and the rest of us went to Denny’s to fill our growling stomachs. Sherri spent the night with me, and we went to sleep about 5:30 or so. (2021 comment - did Barry leave with Randall or go to Denny’s with us???)
The next day, August 21, 1983, Randall and Barry came over to help move the old phonograph and coffee table to my apartment. They were such dolls to do that for me. We finally got it all moved and in place, then we went swimming with Kathleen. That was a whole lot of fun. Randall held me a lot and twirled me around the pool. I got on his shoulders and we did flips. After swimming, we got hamburgers at Wendy’s. They brought me home about 5:30, Randall kissed me goodbye very sweetly and went to his soccer game. After they left, I watched Goodbye Mr. Chips with Peter O’Toole and Petulia Clark and boohooed all the way through it. Needless to say, I enjoyed myself enormously.
I guess you could say that my weekend was anything but uneventful! OOOOHHH! Do I feel good!!

I used to get off work early every Weds nite so I could babysit for Therese and Bryant while she went to night school and he worked. These were absolutely treasured, wonderful times!!
