SEPTEMBER 14, 1984

Friday

I just got back to work after being off for four days. Barry and I finally went on a vacation. We went to Austin and San Antonio. We had a blast! I’m really glad we got to go because I really enjoyed it. I don’t know how comfortable I would be in Missouri staying with people I don't know. (Especially with Janet having a new baby and all.) (2021 comment - Janet was Eric Burns’ wife.. Eric had been friends with me since elementary days and he was Barry’s best friend. Eric died less than two years ago of cancer… like so many of my childhood friends)

I just heard on the radio that Janet Gaynor died today. She was the first woman to receive an Academy Award (for A Star is Born)

(2021 comment - it didn't hit me til now, that James Mason from A Star is Born w/Judy Garland died one day - and Janet Gaynor died the next day - weird)

I wanted to tell a little about our Austin/San Antonio trip. We DID have a good time. Sunday night we arrived in Austin and stayed at Barry’s grandmother’s house. (He called her Mom.)

Monday morning we left for San Antonio. On the outskirts of SA we went to The Natural Bridge Caverns (the largest in Texas.) When we got into SA, we looked around for a hotel, but to no avail, we decided to go ahead and see the Alamo. After the Alamo, we found a motel called Granada Inn. (It happened to be the very same motel I stayed in during our h.s. San Antonio trip in 1979).

That night, we went to the riverwalk and had a great seafood dinner at “The Kangaroo Kourt.” Afterwards, we continued to walk around and decided to take a horse and buggy ride all around San Antonio. That was a lot of fun also. We spent the whole rest of the evening walking around SA at our own pace and stopping to cuddle and kiss every once in a while.

(2021 comment - FUNNY story - Well this is how I remember it now… We had “mostly” a good time, but I do remember after seeing the Alamo (first time for me), I walked across a small median of grass onto a bigger median - and Barry SCREAMED at me “Stay out of the street,” “Stay out of the Street!” He was ridiculously out of control and it wasn’t needed. By the time he came to my side, I was furious and started hitting him with my purse over and over!! LOL! We later referred to it as the REAL “Battle of the Alamo.” (canNOT handle someone yelling at me)

I'm pretty sure RIGHT after our San Antonio trip, we bought my new Regal. These are pics of Barry driving up after work and me showing the car for the first time. We also went to show it to his parents. It could've been right before the trip, but I think this is the right order.

Dr. Dwight Johnson and his sweet wife, Melba. Funny, they look stern here but they were very precious people. He was our family dentist waaay before Barry and I ever met.
